Regional partnership for biodiversity in South-East Europe
As the Biodiversity Task Force of SEE we catalyse a regional response to biodiversity crisis.
We are fostering regional cooperation on biodiversity related issues, committed to jointly progress towards achieving Multilateral Environmental Agreements, including the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework and the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans.
What is
Biodiversity?
Biodiversity is the variety of all life on Earth. It is built out of three intertwined features: ecosystem diversity, species diversity and genetic diversity.
Our lives, livelihoods, survival and culture depend on this web – we use nature as a regulator and as a provider. We need it for food and water, for climate regulation and disaster risk mitigation, as a source of energy and medicine, and to define our cultural and aesthetic values.
The ongoing pandemic is a stark reminder of how fragile our world is.
The crises of biodiversity loss and climate change threaten the fabric of life that we all depend on, from safe water and food availability to health and security.
Nature holds the solution to a prosperous South East Europe!

The Biodiversity Task Force of South East Europe (BDTF SEE) was established in 2017 under the Regional Working Group on Environment (RWG Env) of the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC). Its permanent members are nominated representatives of six economies: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo*, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia.
BDTF SEE Secretariat is hosted by the IUCN Regional Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia (IUCN ECARO). The Open Regional Fund for South-East Europe – Implementation of Biodiversity Agreements (ORF BDU) project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) provided support to the establishment of the BDTF SEE and its Secretariat.
